From our early beginnings in Commercial Arts to todayu2019s Graphic Design Technology Department, discover the milestones, growth, and people that have shaped more than three decades of creative education and industry-focused training.
The Department of Graphic Design Technology at Takoradi Technical University has a long-standing history in creative and technical education, with its roots tracing back to 1992. During this period, HND Commercial Arts programmes were introduced as part of Ghanau2019s polytechnic reforms, providing an important pathway for students who wanted to pursue tertiary-level training in visual communication, commercial art, printing, and applied design. This early foundation helped shape a learning environment where artistic ability could be developed alongside practical and technical skills, preparing students for the realities of professional creative work.
As interest in design education grew, the programme gradually became an important training ground for students seeking careers in the creative and communication industries. The Departmentu2019s early approach combined classroom learning with practical studio work, allowing students to build competence in design processes, production methods, and visual problem-solving. This focus on both creativity and technical application helped establish a strong academic base and created opportunities for students to develop skills that could be applied directly within industry, entrepreneurship, and professional practice.
A major milestone was reached in 2008, when the Department of Graphic Design was formally established from the former Fine Art Department. This development gave graphic design a distinct academic identity, structure, and direction within the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology. With this new structure, the Department was able to broaden its focus and prepare students for work across areas such as graphic design, advertising, packaging, publishing, photography, animation, printing, and related creative fields. The establishment of the Department also strengthened its role in promoting design as both a creative discipline and a practical profession.
Over time, the Department continued to expand beyond the original HND Commercial Arts pathway by introducing Bachelor of Technology and other specialised academic routes. These developments strengthened training in studio practice, multimedia, digital production, print technology, research, entrepreneurship, and professional design practice. As technology became increasingly important in visual communication, the Department adapted its teaching and learning methods to reflect changes in software, media, production techniques, and industry expectations, ensuring that students remained exposed to contemporary design tools and practices.
Today, the Department of Graphic Design Technology celebrates more than three decades of contribution to design education, creative practice, and public service. From its beginnings in Commercial Arts to its present identity as Graphic Design Technology, the Department continues to develop graduates who are creative thinkers, technically skilled practitioners, problem-solvers, and emerging professionals. Through practical learning, innovation, research, and industry-focused training, it remains committed to preparing students to contribute meaningfully to Ghanau2019s creative economy while building the knowledge and confidence needed to compete within the wider design and communication industry.
Our mission is to deliver high-quality tertiary education in Graphic Design Technology through hands-on studio practice, applied arts, research, innovation, and industry-driven training. We aim to develop students with strong creative thinking, technical expertise, entrepreneurial ability, and professional competence, preparing them to succeed across visual communication, printing, packaging, advertising, animation, photography, publishing, and other creative fields while making valuable contributions to Ghanau2019s development.
